For centuries, when a kahuna went to cut down a tree for making a canoe or to make, what we now call a surfboard, he took along a pig, red fish ʻūʻū, and a bunch of kohekohe sedge. He would bury the ʻūʻū, a tapa garment at the base of the tree along with a bunch of kohekohe sedge, and then the pig was put to bake in an imu. Then the tree was cut down.
